We work so hard to secure
our short lives and more often than not, manage
to do so a thousand times over. Yet, what do we do to
secure our next life just a few short years down the
road? Absolutely nothing. Instead, foolishly we go on
accumulating wealth that we can never use and end up
doing far more for our children's spouses, unseen grand-children,
and even complete strangers, all of them not to high
on our list of beneficiaries, and yet would be lolling
on our hard-earned wealth. Even billionaires with technically
enough wealth to live a thousand lifetimes take absolutely
no action to repatriate a portion of their holdings
to a next life right around the corner. Why this gross
neglect? Why this crass stupidity?
To
be fair, it’s not entirely our fault. We are confused
about death; our religions deliver us very rudimentary,
if not highly a dubious fare. There is far too much
of parable speak and theological shenanigans that leave
us thoroughly disillusioned. And as if this weren’t
enough, we have science babbling along, rather long
on promise, but wearily short on delivery. The end result
is: at our death beds we are well and truly unprepared,
and either embarrassingly fishing for some long forgotten
prayer or resignedly given up and playing another benumbing
round of bingo...

Time
to let go...
Fortunately,
according to the Bhagavad-Gita, it all very simple and
for a change, unambiguously delivered. Death is just
like changing our clothes, putting on another pair of
jeans...It is as mundane as that! According to the Bhagavad-Gita
(2:13), what happens at death is a simple and straightforward
process that is in fact preceded in life itself. You
change bodies – exactly as you do so imperceptibly
in life in the process better known as growing.
The
Bhagavad-Gita also urges us to quickly secure our next
life as well. You may be a billionaire today, yet you
can and probably will reincarnate as a coolie in Calcutta,
in your next life, which is often a matter of 5 or 10
years tops. The Gita advices us not to take such foolish
risks. Even a little advancement on the path of self
realization, it goes on to inform us that, is all it
takes to save you from regressing into lower life forms
upon death. Besides, once you are going downhill, it
is a steep, snowballing path down to seriously bad places.
In
this endeavor there is no loss or diminution, and a
little advancement on this path can protect one from
the most dangerous type of fear. (Bhagavad-Gita 2:40)
Yes,
you can secure your next life. Why do you think Indians
spend (perhaps not any more though) a third part of
their life in performing rites and rituals?
You
can and should actively try and secure your next life.
Life unfortunately is not a straight path to heaven
as indeed most Christians think (having apparently acknowledged
Christ or some phantasmagoric theology like that). Indeed,
having being born into a religion and lackadaisically
following its current corrupted version is about as
likely to get you across, as a paper boat would serve
you to cross the Pacific. It requires the same commitment
and dedication that you reserve for earning hard cash.
Nothing more, nothing less.
